Video lectures move faster than your pen. Copy the board on autopilot and half of what the instructor said is gone by next week. Organizing notes by lecture segment

Spoken explanations usually add nuance the written definition leaves out. Copy only what’s on the board and you lose the reasoning that makes a definition stick. Record both: what the instructor writes and what they say out loud.
Say the board reads “mitochondrion: site of ATP production.” The instructor then explains that ATP is the cell’s energy currency and mitochondria act like powerhouses, pumping out ATP so the cell always has fuel. That spoken version hands you the mental model behind the definition, so write it down too.
Plenty of students fall into transcription mode: head down, hand moving, ears switched off. Listen first, then write. You might miss a detail on the board, but you catch the reasoning that makes the detail worth remembering.
Rephrasing definitions in your own words
Restating a definition yourself, as you write it, builds active recall. Exam questions rarely echo the instructor’s exact phrasing, so practicing your own wording now rehearses the way you’ll need to produce it under pressure.
Take “mitochondrion: site of ATP production.” Rather than copy it, translate: “Mitochondria are where cells make the energy molecule ATP.” That small act of rewording processes the idea instead of moving it straight from board to page, and processing is what cements it.
Using personal examples as memory cues
Pairing a term with one memorable example gives you a retrieval cue for later. An example tied to your own life holds better than the instructor’s story memorized word for word, because your brain already has somewhere to file it.
Studying mitochondria, you might jot: “Like my phone battery: dead phone, no function; dead mitochondria, no cell energy.” That homemade link sticks. Keep the step optional, though, since it depends on how you remember: some people anchor ideas through examples, others through repetition or spotting patterns.
Handling graphs, charts, and diagrams
When you copy a graph, capture the trend rather than the exact values. In live note-taking the relationship carries the meaning: a distance-time graph accelerating at a constant rate just needs a curve that bends upward, not pixel-perfect points. Precise plotting burns time you don’t have mid-lecture.
Diagrams work the same way, and they teach visual learners regardless of your drawing skill. A rough sketch of the water cycle conveys the path as well as a polished one, since the value sits in the structure rather than the art. Quick shapes are enough: a straight line, a curve, a horizontal plateau, refined later if you need to study the image in detail.
Using transcripts and captions as backup
When a lecture video comes with a transcript or captions, treat it as a backup for your notes rather than a replacement. A transcript lets you slow down and reread a passage you missed while your hand was busy.
