During class you touch only the right column. Write at the instructor’s pace, the way you always would, and leave the left column and the bottom strip blank.
Within 24 hours of class, go back to the page. Fill the left column with questions your right-column notes already answer, then write two or three sentences at the bottom that capture the whole page. That quick pass right after class is where most of the retention comes from, and it leaves you with built-in study prompts.
The layout turns raw notes into a quiz. Cover the right column, read a left-column question, and answer from memory before you check. The summary keeps the page’s main idea in view. Pulling answers out of your head this way beats re-reading, because you retrieve the information instead of letting your eyes slide over it.
The Mind Map Method: Visual Branching Notes
Start with a blank sheet, draw a circle in the middle, and write your main topic inside it. Branch lines outward, and at the end of each one write a subtopic and circle it.
From every subtopic, branch again into supporting details and finer sub-branches. What you get looks like a tree, and each ring of branches marks a deeper level of detail. Visual thinkers often hold this layout in memory better than rows of text.
Mind maps earn their keep in planning, not in live lectures. They work when you already have raw material and want to organize your thinking on top of it, like planning a blog post or reviewing a subject you already grasp. Mid-lecture, building a proper map means pausing to judge which detail belongs at which level, and that judgment pulls your attention off the speaker so you miss the next point.

The Flow Method: Building a Mental Model
Scott Young invented the flow method, and he’s the person who cleared MIT’s computer science curriculum requirements in a single year. His approach puts understanding ahead of transcription.
Rather than copying every detail, you condense what you hear into your own words. Capture the core idea, the logic behind it, and how the pieces connect. When an earlier point links to new material, draw an arrow or a branch between them, and keep going back to add connections as the lecture moves.
The flow method focuses on building a personal mental model of the material instead of recording every detail.
You end up with a map of how the concepts relate and build on each other rather than a word-for-word transcript. Processing the material this actively forces deeper engagement while the lecture is still happening.
The catch is that flow demands steady concentration and some foundation. Hearing unfamiliar terms for the first time while trying to build a mental model can leave you stranded. It pays off when you’ve had prior exposure to the subject, or when the instructor leaves you room to think.
The Write-on-Slides Method: Annotating Lecture Slides
Some professors post lecture slides ahead of class. When yours does, print them and bring the stack with you.
Write your notes directly on the printed slides as the lecture runs. Your handwriting sits next to the slide content, which keeps both the visual layout and the order the material arrived in.
This only works when the professor releases slides in advance, and plenty keep them locked until after class. When you do get them early, there’s nothing to rewrite or reorganize later, because your annotations already live on the slides where you made them.
The trade-off is simple: you inherit the quality of the deck. Sparse or vague slides give you little to annotate, while a detailed, well-built deck hands you an organizing frame before you write a word.
Choosing a Method and Turning Notes Into Study Materials
No single method wins every lecture. Outline fits sequential, hierarchical material with clear structure. Cornell builds review in from the first day, mind maps show relationships and suit post-lecture organization, and flow builds understanding through active processing. Write-on-slides works whenever the slides come out early.
