Why Most Tracking Fails
Time spent studying has almost no correlation with how much you remember. A 2006 study by Roediger and Karpicke at Washington University demonstrated this directly: two groups of students spent identical time with the same material. One group re-read it. The other tested themselves. A week later, the self-testing group remembered significantly more, even though they "studied" less in the traditional sense of turning pages and re-reading sentences.

- Recall difficulty over time — is it getting easier to remember, or staying just as hard?
- Gaps, not just wins — what have you forgotten, not just what you've completed?
- Consistency over intensity — did you show up regularly, regardless of session length?
Retention rate
Can you retrieve this information without looking at it? That's the only metric that matters for long-term learning. Everything else — time, completion percentage, highlights made — is a proxy that often misleads you into thinking you've learned more than you have. A course you finished six months ago and a course you finished yesterday should not look the same on a progress tracker if you can no longer recall anything from the first one.
Recall difficulty over time
How hard is it to remember something after one day? After one week? After one month? If recall gets easier over time with shorter sessions, the knowledge is consolidating properly. If it stays just as hard every time you review it, you need more repetition, a different explanation, or a stronger connection to something you already understand.
Gaps, not just wins
Most progress tracking shows you what you've completed: chapters read, modules finished, badges earned. More useful is tracking what you've forgotten or gotten wrong. A system that surfaces your weakest areas and prioritizes them in review sessions is more valuable than one that only celebrates streaks, because the weak spots are exactly where your effort produces the most improvement per minute spent.
Consistency over intensity
A single intense study weekend looks impressive on a calendar but research on distributed practice consistently shows that consistency matters more than any individual session's length. Tracking whether you showed up regularly, even briefly, is often a better predictor of long-term retention than tracking total hours in any given week.
