Anki: powerful scheduling with high setup friction

Anki is the oldest and most powerful flashcard app here. Its spaced-repetition algorithm (SM-2) has been refined against decades of memory research, and for students who learn the interface, nothing schedules reviews better.

The cost is a steep learning curve. You build every card by hand, either typing into Anki or importing a CSV, TSV, or semicolon-delimited file. Hundreds of settings sit behind that: card templates, deck structure, timing, review intervals, and the granular control that thrills power users is the same thing that freezes beginners.

That trade-off cuts against most students. With 500 cards to review, Anki’s scheduling keeps you efficient and honest. RemNote: notes and flashcards in one tool

RemNote is a note-taking app that doubles as a flashcard tool. You write in RemNote’s format, mark sections as flashcards through its bidirectional-link system, and the app turns those marked sections into review items automatically.

Students who want one tool tend to like this. Everything lives in one place, and cards come out of your notes without retyping anything. The interface supports nested notes and links, so related ideas connect the way you actually think about them.

The catch is lock-in. The flashcard integration only works cleanly inside RemNote’s format, and while export runs, the full bidirectional structure does not survive the move to another app. If RemNote closes or you migrate later, your notes come with you; the connections between them mostly do not.

Mochi: markdown flashcards with intentional design

Mochi keeps flashcard design deliberately small. You write cards in Markdown, so your study material stays plain text and stays portable, and the app puts its weight behind visual clarity and a review screen with nothing to distract you.

It fits students who like markdown and want a clean, quiet place to review. Mochi does not try to run your whole workflow. You keep notes elsewhere, in Obsidian or Apple Notes, and use Mochi only for spaced repetition. That split appeals to anyone who already has a note system and wants study material kept separate.

The limit is that Mochi generates nothing for you. You write the markdown by hand, which beats Anki for a fluent markdown user but still takes real time. It is also less known than Anki or Quizlet, so shared card sets and community help are thin.

Quizlet: mass-market study games and ready-made sets

Quizlet is the easiest place for a new student to start. It hosts millions of pre-made sets across nearly every subject, so you search your class, open a set someone already built, and review in seconds. The review comes wrapped in games, from matching to writing modes, that feel more like play than study.

That is both the appeal and the ceiling. When a set already exists for your topic, nothing gets you reviewing faster. Study something niche or freshly assigned and you are back to building cards by hand, one typed or pasted entry at a time.

Quizlet trades depth for breadth and engagement. The games work for short-term recall and for making a session less of a slog. Long-term mastery leans on spaced repetition more than on games, and Quizlet’s scheduling is weaker than Anki’s or even RemNote’s.

Fluxo: AI-generated flashcards from your own notes

Fluxo starts from the opposite end. You write your notes inside Fluxo, organized with spaces and topics, and its AI generates flashcards, quizzes, and summaries straight from what you wrote. You do the thinking and writing; the app works to make it stick through spaced-repetition review.

Where Fluxo falls short

Fluxo is not right for every student, and hiding that would waste your time. It has no library of pre-made sets, so if you want to learn fast from someone else’s cards, Quizlet’s millions of shared sets get you there quicker. Fluxo assumes you write your own notes, which is the strongest way to learn but asks more of you upfront.

Data portability is the murkier part. We could not confirm how easily you can export your notes and study material if you switch apps later, and lock-in undercuts the point of a tool you plan to use for years.

Fluxo also skips classroom and teacher management. If you need to run study groups or share notes with classmates in an organized way, this is a personal-use app only.

Which app fits your study style

Pick Anki if your study needs are complex and you will spend the hours to learn its configuration. Nothing beats it for serious students grinding technical material over the long haul. The curve is steep and the payoff is real.

Pick RemNote if you want notes and flashcards tightly woven and you are fine living inside its ecosystem. It rewards students who build their own knowledge systems and want cards to grow out of their notes.

Pick Mochi if you already write notes in markdown elsewhere and want a clean, distraction-free flashcard app to pair with them. Pick Quizlet if you want to start today with pre-made sets, or you like games and social features, and you study mainstream topics where shared sets already exist.

Pick Fluxo if you write detailed notes and want an AI to pull out and drill the key concepts for you. It is strongest for students who learn by writing and reviewing material they already understand, and who would rather have study material generated from that writing than build it card by card.

Make your own notes do the studying
